To warm the heart

Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays and meals! I am also a huge fan of batch cocktails for a party. This year we are making hot apple cider. This warm beverage fills your home with comforting aromas and warms everyone up as they arrive. An added plus is that this recipe is non alcoholic. A seasonal classic the whole family can enjoy. To add extra warmth, set out some of your go to brown spirits that can be added when serving.

Mulled Cider for Thanksgiving - Hot Apple Cider

- 1 Gallon Apple Cider
- 1 orange sliced
- 3 Cinnamon sticks (+ extra for garnish but not needed)
- 2 cloves
- 1/2 tsp allspice

In a stock pot, add the cider, ½ of the sliced orange, cinnamon, cloves and allspice. Over medium - high heat, bring the cider up to a boil then turn off the heat. Allow the cider to steep for 20 minutes. Just like making tea, the longer the spices are in the hot liquid the stronger the flavors will become. If left in too long the flavors can become overwhelming and turn bitter. This is why at this stage I recommend removing the seasonings.

Strain out all of the seasonings and transfer to a crock-pot for the easiest way to keep cider warm without taking up your precious cooking space. Set the croc to warm. With the remaining orange, cut the slices into quarters and use them as garnish.

Now if you would like to kick the cider up a notch set out a few bottles of your go to brown spirits. I would recommend bourbon, rye whiskey, apple brandy or dark rum.
