Spooky crops and scary candies

Tis the season to let our inner child play! Halloween isn't just for kids. Sure, you won’t find me in a costume knocking on doors but I will be more than happy to carve pumpkins, decorate the house, eat candy, and watch some seasonally spooky films.

Pumpkin carving has always been my favorite part of this holiday. Growing up this was such a fun activity having the table covered with newspaper, scooping out the cold guts of the pumpkin, my mom roasting the seeds for a snack, cutting out your design and finally seeing your pumpkin lit up at night on the porch. I went for the typical face with goofy teeth. Being a purist I never was one for tracing a printout. These were real works of art. It was such a thing of pride to have people come by and see the creations on your porch.

This year I have taken this fun and applied it to one of my favorite treats:

Rice Crispy Halloween treats!

- 3T Butter
- 40 Marshmallows (10oz Bag)
- 6 cups puffed rice cereal
- 2 cups Candy corn
- Orange and yellow food coloring
- 1 tub of white frosting
- 2 tubes black decorating gel
- Anything else your heart desires to make your creation!

Step 1: Prepare 2 - 9in cake pans by spraying them with cooking spray.

Step 2: In a microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Add in 8 drops of orange food coloring and stir until smooth.

Step 3: Next, add in the cereal and candy corn. Mix until well incorporated.

Step 4: Put half of the mix in each pan. Press down with either a buttered spatula or I simply sprayed my cleaned fingers with baking spray and evened out the mixture.

Step 5:Allow the rice crispy treats to cool before decorating.

Step 6: Decorate however you wish and have fun!

I separated the tub of icing into three different bowls and colored one grey, one yellow and kept one white. I first laid down yellow in the areas that would be “cut out” on a pumpkin. Hoping to give the effect of the glowing light coming through. I then traced the areas with the grey, but also thought that black would look great too. No rules in this project!
